I was witnessing to a friend. He brought up the question of why couldn't there be two eternal beings. I couldn't really think of a reason. Could you help me out?

I was just pondering your question on why couldn't there be 2 eternal beings. Allow me to think out loud.

The universe is extremely orderly. At least what we know about our solar system is. All the stars, planets and moons obey the same laws (e.g. Gravity exists to some degree on all stars, planets and moons). That's what science is all about - discovering the laws of nature. So far, through the centuries, much has been discovered and have been tabbed as "laws" because whatever they discovered always happens.

There are billions of contingencies in our world and universe and yet it is all so cohesive and much of it explainable. If two eternal beings existed, then their plans, purposes and laws would have to be identical. Otherwise, we would be experiencing constant chaos where we couldn't know anything for sure - maybe one when we jump, we may never come down. The chances of that are basically nil. Why not three, four, or five eternal beings?

In theory, perhaps there could be other eternal beings in other universes and in other dimensions. But, at least we know that in our universe, there's only one. We can reason this via the cosmological, teleological, morality, and life purpose arguments, among others (I didn't do a very good job explaining them last night, so if you want to go over them more thoroughly and clearly, let's set some time to do that). However, we can KNOW this because the Bible says so. God is sovereign over what He creates. He created the universe and hence, it is under His control and under His laws.

Keep in mind when witnessing that you don't allow yourself to get too sidetracked by theoretical questions. After you've given a reasonable answer, get back to the main point, the gospel. For instance, if I were witnessing to you (you being a non Christian), I could even grant you that maybe other eternal beings existed. However, the eternal being governing our universe, the one who created us, wants us to honor Him but because of your sin, you can't. So He gave us His Son in order that we may do so. So you need to give your life to Jesus so you may do what He wants you to do, honor Him.
