Dear Arthur and Sandra:

I have a question. Is naming your son Jesus using the Lord's name in vain?

No, it isn't using the Lord's name in vain to name your son Jesus, though I, myself, wouldn't do it for various reasons - I don't think it's probably the best thing to do in western culture. If, of course one names his son Jesus to spite Christ or to say that they don't believe in God, or to say that their son is the new messiah, or something intentional like that, then it is taking His name in vain and more; it's blasphemy.

Jesus was Christ's human, earthly name - in Greek, I believe. In Hebrew, it was Yeshua from which we get Joshua. Thus, the name Joshua is really the equivalent of Jesus, and we have lots of Joshuas around.

Actually, the name given to Jesus that is above all names and that every knee will bow to in Phillipians 2, is the name or title LORD, not the name Jesus. Look it up.

Blessings,

Arthur
